A Historic Ranking Change
The Treasury Markets Association released its semi-annual survey results this month. They show average daily foreign-exchange turnover in Hong Kong climbed to US$908.2 billion in April 2025. That is a substantial rise by any measure.
Dollar-yuan volume accounted for 30.2% of total Hong Kong FX activity. It surpassed the Hong Kong dollar–US dollar pair, which reached US$240.2 billion per day. The previous survey recorded dollar-yuan daily volume at US$198.6 billion. The April figure represents a jump of roughly 38% in a single survey period.
This is the first time the yuan pair has topped Hong Kong’s FX rankings. The shift is structural. It reflects the yuan’s expanding role in regional trade settlement, cross-border financing, and offshore capital flows.
‘Hong Kong’s FX market is reflecting a bigger yuan footprint in regional trade and finance,’ said one senior market strategist, capturing what the data plainly show.
What Does the Shift Mean for Investors?
The ranking change reinforces Hong Kong’s position as the world’s primary offshore yuan centre. Beijing and Hong Kong authorities have introduced measures to support currency, bond, and gold trading in the city. That policy backing adds depth to the market. It widens participation and encourages firms managing mainland flows to book more activity through Hong Kong.
For banks and brokers, the signal is actionable. Higher dollar-yuan turnover creates stronger commercial justification for expanding yuan trading desks, hedging services, and treasury operations. It also supports growth in offshore renminbi bond issuance and structured products linked to mainland assets.
The Hong Kong dollar peg to the US dollar remains firmly in place. The city’s FX market is therefore becoming more diversified — not less strategic. Dollar dominance in settlement and reserves is unchanged. What has shifted is the weight of yuan activity sitting alongside it.
Regional Context and the Road Ahead
The April data connect to a broader pattern visible across Asia. Yuan usage in trade invoicing has grown steadily over recent years. Hong Kong sits at the centre of that trend. It channels offshore yuan liquidity between mainland China and international counterparties. The Treasury Markets Association figures confirm that this intermediary role is deepening.
Cross-border payment flows, dim sum bond issuance, and gold-linked yuan products are all areas where Hong Kong is expanding capacity. Each of those segments benefits when spot FX liquidity rises. Higher turnover reduces bid-ask spreads and lowers hedging costs for all participants.
The next test is whether the April figures represent a durable step-change or a cyclical surge. Investors and treasury teams should track yuan deposit growth, offshore renminbi bond volumes, and gold trading activity in Hong Kong through the remainder of 2025 — those metrics will confirm whether this structural shift is holding.
